The Lovely Bones

Monday, June 25, 2007

Thanks to Haoling, I read The Lovely Bones. I think it's by far one of the best books I had ever laid my hands on. "Never judge a book by its cover" serves my purpose well in describing how a pale blue exterior, on which only a charm bracelet and title stood, a book so ordinary upfront, but extraordinary inmost.

I like the way Alice Sebold commands her language, the way she plays with words, the way she stirs up a rampage of an appetite through the twists and turns of the plot. I marvelled at the characters' dialogues, their convictions in wanting to make things happen and how love and forgiveness were so easily forged as well as shaken. I can still remember how the pair of sisters in the story were convinced that there was to be only one true love in each of our lives, there was no concept of compromise, or retries. It was a belief, their beliefs, and they struggled to live it out, one alive and the other dead.

A map of relationships entwine them - family, friends, strangers...all built on love. Each time I try to do a mental review of The Lovely Bones, I fail. The wield of the story so powerful, it springs new thoughts in my mind through the many perspectives I learn to perceive it from. At the end of it all, I have to confess that I am lost as to what Alice Sebold wants me, one of her many readers, to take away from her.

Intrinsically, yes, the story has no ending.

This book just leaves me agape.

Some Rants

Thursday, June 21, 2007

Having visited Chomp Chomp Food Centre near Serangoon Garden Way yesterday with the Economists for dinner last night, I decided to eat healthy today (which means not eating much actually), but I succumbed to some temptations along the way, since my colleague just got back from a Genting trip and I felt I would be doing myself injustice if I didn't touch the snacks she brought back. So here I am, still feeling slightly guilty.

After conversing with them (the Economists), I can't help feeling left out from all the buzz of looking for a job and settling for one, it's like half the clique has graduated already and I have to still subject myself to another gruelling year with the rest. On top of that, I will continue being a poor undergrad. That sucks man. I wish I can tap into my future income right now. Anyhow, I have been shopping big time. Online, offline, you name it. I have since become about $200 poorer from a few days ago. I need to master the skill of financial survival, fast.

In a few weeks time it'll be timetable planning, with headaches close at heels. Oh well, last second time. I have to keep telling myself this. It's such a comforting thought. Oh by the way, I just started on The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, 20 odd pages from the onset and I am so drawn by the plot already, no wonder it's an international bestseller.

I can smell the weekend! Sungei Road laksa and The Asian Kitchen! Alright, dinner then my book!

The Mind Cafe, Yet Again

Sunday, June 17, 2007

We played Taboo, some mind guessing game and a bone game.

The bone game was great, because through it all, cards kept sliding off the table, it was so action-packed I declare the game unsuitable for the weak-hearted, some people were so shrewd and their acting skills so real Mediacorp should really consider signing them up for a year or two *ahem* =/, somebody became zhuai after getting hold of a bone, I caused my Mr Leong's spectacles to land on the floor (yes I'm violent! -_-) and best of all, there was just so much laughter! :D

I'm glad for the afternoon, for lunch with Wanlin at Ya Kun, and the company I always adore. =)

I'm not glad tomorrow is Monday. =(

Let's Eat Eat Eat!

Saturday, June 16, 2007

I have become a glutton lately. Too much food, too much good food in fact. My memory of what I did from the last time I blogged has turned obsolete, so some random pictures will take my place and do the talking.

P.S. I love the monkey, but it's not mine! *pout* Mr Leong loves it too! (but he don't want to admit it) =/

Most of my friends who graduated have secured jobs. My brother found his dream one too, and his pay is turning me all green with envy. I wish I were him, really. I have decided to pursue my 4th year to not collide with regrets later on in life. Sometimes, I think if I couldn't qualify for honours things would have been so much easier. Hmm..now poor me still got to slog another year for my degree, and the blues of studying sure steers me off. -_-

With Mummy

Thursday, June 07, 2007

We tend to neglect the people closest to us, and to take them for granted. The 1 week study break this semester and the past procured me with some quality time spent at home and I saw how my mummy worked. Believe me when I say this. A housewife is the worse occupation anyone can have. It's not even the usual complaint of underworked, overpaid. It's NEVER-ENDING work, and to top it all off, NO pay.

Therefore, I made a promise to myself that I will give my mummy a treat after my examinations. Being very nice to my pocket, she scrutinized the menu for reasonable prices affixed to meals, worrying that I would have to fork out too much money at the end of the day.

Ok, I know my resemblance to her would probably rest on the the precarious scale of zero but please do not hesitate to trust me that she is not some kind hearted soul who picked me up from the roadside dustbin though this evil joke has already run rampant in my family. Hahaha.

I can't wait for the weekend to be here! :D

Vesak Day

Friday, June 01, 2007

Foreboding that my family will be on their usual temple visit, I was quick on my toes to make plans for myself yesterday. I am the only one in the family who is a free-thinker. Admittedly, sometimes I feel left out from the religious scene. Like you know, when it's time for the examinations, I always fear there will be no one from above watching over me. Will I actually do worse than others because of this? I never found the answer though.

I am really determined to be an atheist. I am for secularism, always on the spur to clasp the confidence that rests in me, and the faith that my fate lies in my own hands. I don't know if one day I will change my mind on this, but I am very certain a profane spirit is just what I need now, and till the day it takes on another form, I will just continue to enjoy all the religious holidays in the year:) I respect your religion, so please respect mine.

A dosage of Yiying, my bestest friend in the world. It was shades day, super glamourous to have them in sunny Singapore. She self-declared her resemblance to a beetle and that sent me laughing till my stomach hurts:D It was just non-stop talking basically.

P.S. I love maroon shades!

I will be seeing this girl again pretty soon, this time to spend some money in the name of beauty. Can't wait!

Oh ya, I saw Huang Lingyun on my way home from work just now. For insights of our conversation, please ask me the next time we meet. All I can say now is that she NEVER fails to leave me gaping each time I talk to her. Ok, in a bad way that is. =/

I am finishing The Five People You Meet in Heaven, the book is so good! It's a shame I took 22 years to discover that:( Tomorrow is Subway and frog porridge day...hmmhmmhmm!
